Who Is the New Patient Offer Consultation For?
Our new patient consultation is for patients who would like to improve or optimise their oral health, discuss concerns about their teeth or mouth, or establish a clear picture of their current dental health.
We welcome patients of all ages.
New patient consultations last approximately 30–45 minutes.
What Happens at Your Dental Consultation?
Before carrying out any clinical examination, your dentist will take time to listen to you.
They will want to understand what has brought you to the practice, whether you have any concerns and what you would like to achieve with your dental care.
Understanding you as a person helps your dentist consider your oral health in the wider context of your needs, lifestyle and priorities.
Once you have had the opportunity to talk, your dentist will begin their clinical assessment.
A Detailed Examination of Your Teeth, Gums and Mouth
Your new patient dental examination may include several different assessments.
Extra-Oral Assessment
Your dentist will examine the outside of your face and jaw, looking for any unusual swelling or asymmetry.
They may also consider how your bite relates to the muscles and joints surrounding your jaw.
Examination Inside Your Mouth
Your dentist will carefully assess your teeth, gums, soft tissues and existing dental work.
This can include:
- Recording and charting your teeth
- Checking the condition of existing fillings, crowns or other dental work
- Looking for signs of tooth decay
- Identifying areas that may increase your risk of future dental problems
- Assessing teeth that may be weakened and discussing ways they could potentially be strengthened
- Checking the health of your gums with a periodontal examination
- Carrying out a routine oral cancer screening as part of your examination
Routine oral cancer screening is an important part of a dental examination because early changes in the mouth can sometimes develop without obvious symptoms and may not be noticed by the patient.
Your dentist will examine the soft tissues of the mouth and surrounding areas for anything that may require further assessment.
A detailed assessment can help your dentist build a clearer picture of your current oral health and identify any areas that may benefit from treatment, preventative care, monitoring or further investigation.
Digital 3D Scanning When Clinically Appropriate
If your dentist believes it would be useful, they may recommend taking a 3D digital scan of your teeth using our intraoral scanner.
When required as part of this consultation, the baseline scan is provided at no additional charge.
The scan creates a digital record of your teeth that can be useful for monitoring them over time and comparing any changes at future appointments.
Your dentist will advise whether a digital scan would be appropriate for you.
Dental X-Rays
Your dentist may recommend dental X-rays where clinically appropriate and with your permission.
Some areas of the teeth, roots, gums and supporting bone cannot be fully assessed simply by looking inside the mouth, so X-rays can provide useful additional information.
Dental X-rays are not included in the £20 consultation fee and are charged separately. Your dentist will explain which X-rays are recommended, why they are being advised and the cost before they are taken.
Current fees are:
- Bitewing or Periapical Radiographs — £49.80
- Panoramic (OPT) X-Ray — £69.00
Depending on your individual needs, your dentist may recommend one or more of these as part of your assessment.
Bitewing or Periapical Radiographs
These X-rays can help the dentist assess specific areas of the mouth that are not always visible during a clinical examination, including between teeth and around individual teeth and roots.
Panoramic (OPT) X-Ray
A panoramic X-ray provides a wider image of the upper and lower jaws and teeth.
It can help your dentist assess areas such as the roots of your teeth, wisdom teeth and the bone supporting your teeth.
Your dentist will only recommend X-rays where they consider them clinically appropriate.
Your Personalised Treatment Plan
Once your examination and any agreed imaging have been completed, your dentist will explain their findings clearly.
You will receive a personalised treatment plan outlining any recommended care, recommended treatment options, associated costs and the next steps.
The aim is to give you a clear understanding of your oral health and the options that may be appropriate for you.
Prevention is an important part of long-term dental care, so your dentist will also explain how you can help protect your teeth and gums going forward.
Referral to Our Dental Hygienists
If your dentist feels that you would benefit from additional gum care or preventative support, they may recommend a referral to one of our dental hygienists.
Our hygiene team can help support the health of your gums, remove plaque and calculus where appropriate and provide tailored advice to help you maintain your oral health between appointments.
Going Ahead With Your Treatment Plan
Once your dentist has explained your treatment plan, you can decide whether you would like to proceed.
For most treatment plans, a 50% payment is required to secure your treatment appointments.
For treatment plans of £1,000 or more, finance or payment plan options may be available. These are subject to eligibility, approval and the terms and conditions of the finance provider.
For orthodontic treatment, full payment is required in advance.
Our team will explain the payment arrangements that apply to your individual treatment plan before treatment begins.
How Long Is a New Patient Dental Consultation?
Your first appointment will normally last approximately 30–45 minutes.
This gives your dentist time to listen to you, carry out the appropriate clinical checks and discuss their findings and recommendations.
Nervous About Visiting the Dentist?
If you feel nervous or anxious about visiting the dentist, please tell us.
Our dentists are experienced in caring for nervous patients and will take the time to listen to your concerns and help you feel as comfortable as possible during your appointment.
For patients who experience more significant dental anxiety and require treatment, dental sedation with a trained consultant anaesthetist is also available.
If this is something you think you may need, you can discuss it with your dentist during your first consultation.
Your dentist will explain if a hygiene appointment is recommended as part of your treatment plan.
